Default Is your maintenance cost this high?

I've reached 15,000 miles in my car and called into make an appointment for the minimum service required. I was quoted $160! My previous maintencce visit at 10,000 was $100 - still expensive but i got it done anyway. I can't understand $160. What do you guys pay?

Thats actually low from what Ive seen. Most dealers quote $400.

Regardless, if you have more than half a brain, you can do it yourself.

(1) Wipers. 20 seconds
(2) Engine Air Filters, 20 seconds per side.

I highly doubt your In-Cabin filter needs to be changed at 15K. If your A/C doesnt stink, there is no need to bother.

Its $25 for the wipers at Walmart and the air filters can be snagged on eBay for $25 for two intake filters. Total of $50.

All thats left over is an oil change and a tire rotation. Thats all your dealer should be doing on your car.

Do you have an itemized list of what you were charged for?

Unless you had an odor, this is a premature item to change out at 15k.

If you've ever gone to the dealer for an oil change , look at the service sheet, they do all the same inspections as the so called service intervals. This whole thing is a scam for the dealer to make more money. What really needs to be done at 15k-50k? other than routine oil/filter changes?

@chili: looks like the micro-filter is on the list for 15k for replacement. Why do you say that it's premature?

They also said my engine air filters needed replacing but they deferred that.

@houm_wa ,

Q: Why do you say that it's premature?
A: It depends on where you live and driving habits. If you are driving in an area that has high pollen count, or lots of dust in the air, and often run your cabin blower on high then change the micro-filter more often. But if you drive in dry, clear air, and don't run your cabin blower on high more often, then the micro-filter will not need to replaced as often.

Likewise, changing brake fluid depends on your driving location and habit. Brake fluid is hygroscopic which means it absorbs and holds moisture. When it does, an acid is created (especially in heat) that can damage brake mechanisms.

If you are "hard" on your brakes, live in a hot and humid climate, then your brake fluid should be replaced more often. But if you drive your brakes "softer" and your weather is less humid and less hot, then you will not need to replace your brake fluid as often.
