I have a vibration when I brake so I took my q50 into the dealer and they said brake pads are fine, but the rotors are warped and it is not covered under warranty. He said it was a parts defect. How is it possible this isn't covered under the warranty? My car has less than 30,000 miles.
Do you like to drive with your left foot on the brake pedal?
Have you driven with your parking brake on?
A part defect would be a very rare circumstance. Most people with warped rotors did something to cause that. I'm not suggesting you drive like an idiot, but some people do.
My dealer resurfaced my rotors twice and replaced brake pads all for free
But, I got so fed up by the warped issue of the stock rotors/brake pads I replaced it with Stoptech rotors and Hawks brake pads.
Never have the warped issue ever since.
I believe that is only on the sport. Something to do with the locating pins causing the problem? Not sure that they are replacing parts unless necessary. Just resurface.
I'm sure someone that has had it done will chime in here.
My old 2009 G37x would downright EAT the rear rotors/pads. I would develop the warped rotor issue very quickly - within 6 months of a fresh brake job. My only solution back then was to put cross-drilled and slotted rotors. From the moment I did that, to the moment I sold that car, 1.5 years passed without issue.
My 2014 Q50 has the exact same issue. I spoke to my dealer and it's apparently a very common thing that happens with the rear rotors since they tend to overheat easily, plus the material used for the rear rotors isn't up to snuff. Again, just like with my old G37x, on my Q50 I ordered a set of cross-drilled and slotted rotors and ceramic pads from a local company which manufactured it to my specific size. The problem has not happened again and that was like a year ago...
I had my tires balanced over the weekend. The guy that did them told me my front rotors are warped and on a new car with 40,000k shouldn't have this problem. He said they should be under warranty and replaced by the dealers. When I called the dealer they basically laughed at me.
I think I am starting to notice this as well with 22k on the clock. I understand what myself as a driver can do to prematurely cause this issue, and I have done none of those things. Next time I bring it in for an oil change I will see what they say. I have never had rotors warp so quickly on a car in my life.
I have the shakes when applying the brakes @ 60+mph. The more they heat up, the worse it gets, but hats expected with warped rotors. It's a common issue as many have stated throughout the forum and most prominent on the Sport models. I have my eye on some StopTechs when my pad change comes along, I only have 12k miles now. The shakes have been happening since about 9k miles, but I can tolerate it given I drive the car 10 miles or less a day to and from work (no highway).
I don't ride the brakes, I don't make any "operation errors" which have caused the warping, it's honestly a defect from the vehicle. No other car I've had has exhibited this issue (g35, Ex35, fx35) all which I've owned and still have FX35 (wife's)
I had the warped brakes issue on all of my G35x/G37x except the 2013.. strangely enough on the 13 I had put on a set of the MGP Caliper covers.. yes you can laugh.. but one of the things they are supposed to do is since they're aluminum they're supposed to act bit like a heat sink? could be..No issue yet with the Q but I've only got 6K on it.. and FWIW my dealer has always stepped up and taken care of warped rotors under warranty.. another reason to have a good relationship with your dealer..
Everyone interprets it different, but I respect your opinion. If heat was the issue all discs would warp as they all experience extreme friction. Uneven wear from pad > disc material, over torque of bolts, plus others are the real cause. Again, you are entitled to your interpretation.
Heat is the enemy for brake fade/performance (depending). Some pads perform better in heat and prevent fade, others have street applications where they have initial bite then fade when heat comes in. The slots/drill rotors help depending on the application and what the use of the car will be.
You guys can go ahead and add me to the warped rotors club! Around 4000 miles I started to feel the pulsating front the front end but thought maybe the tires were a little flat spotted from sitting over night.
Finally took the car in today for service (with 4900 miles) and told him what was going on- without going into specifics just because I wanted to see what they would come up with.
The all so friendly service adviser tells me that my rotors are WARPED, its normal "happens to all cars" and asks about my driving style. I go ahead and pull out a few printouts of threads and even a TSB I found on this forum and throw it on his desk. Priceless moment! All of a sudden "oh we might resurface the rotors if there is a problem" and look into that TSB.
Just picked up the car a little while ago and she's smooth as silk again- all done under warranty and at no charge. What they did is just a band aid to mask the real problem. Service Adviser was magically busy when I came in and the tech who worked on my car even went ahead and told me that I'll most likely be back before 10k miles because this is a common problem with the Sport model.
If I did rip the car into shreds on a frequent basis then yes I would place all the blame on myself. Most of my driving is highway and the car never really sees hard braking. All the other cars I've owned, both entry level and luxury, have never had these issues until way into the 30k-40k mile range.
Anyway, sorry for the long write up but I would like to thank you guys for posting these experiences on here because it probably saved a few of us some serious money at the stealership.
Adding on to that. I had about 70k miles on my EX before I sold it, I went through 3 sets of Hawks pads on them, they did not shake at all. My sister purchased the car, she's out about 8k miles on it, same rotors... The Q's Sport brake rotors are cheap and crap.
7500 miles on my 2015 and have already had to replace the rotors. Went with dimpled slotted all the way around and my warped ones ended up being in the rear!! I'm sure warranty would have taken care of them but I wanted the dimp/slotted ones so I didn't even worry about it!!!
I've had the issue several times on my pervious G37's but on the 2013 G37 I didn't have the issue at all at least up to the 36K when I turned it in off lease. My 15 Q50 has about 7500 miles on it, feels fine. FWIW my dealer has always been good about the brakes and has replaced them every time under warranty no questions asked.
This is an issue with EVERY carmaker. It's a "driver" problem (for the most part) and not the fault of the parts. It's caused but the sloughing off of break pad material. When a high speed fast stop is made (panic stop), IF YOU KEEP YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKES WHEN STOPPED, brake pads literally melt to the rotors. This leaves a patch of rotor with a higher friction coefficient than the rest. That's the vibration you feel. It can be removed with a light sanding with some fine grain wet or dry type sandpaper.
NOVEMBER 6, 2016 ? Infiniti Q50S brake pad problems have caused a California man to file a proposed class-action lawsuit after allegations the sport brake pads damage the rotors causing the rotors to warp.
Plaintiff Steven Brand says he leased a 2015 Infiniti Q50 equipped with sport brakes and after about 10,000 miles of driving, he had to take the car to a dealership because the car vibrated when Brand hit the brake pedal. The dealership determined warped front rotors were causing the problems, so Infiniti resurfaced the rotors and replaced the brake pads.
Brand says he continued to experience brake problems after the dealer made repairs and in May 2016, Brand allegedly took the Q50 back to the dealership because the car vibrated when applying the brakes, especially when traveling at highway speeds.
The plaintiff claims the dealership told him the Q50 brake pads and rotors needed replaced again because the rotors were warped. But it didn't end there because the plaintiff says the brakes started making grinding sounds only four months after the dealer made repairs.
The last time the plaintiff took the car for repairs, no repairs were performed by the dealer and Mr. Brand says he was stuck with the brake problems.
A check online shows other Infiniti Q50 owners complaining about similar problems with their brakes, not only on the Q50S but other variants of the Q50 cars, including an owner who complained to CarComplaints.com.
"Brakes were warped after being cut twice. Sport brakes were terrible..they tried to fix the issue. The only way was to replace the brakes. They also make horrible groaning noises sounded like a rusty swing set." - 2014 Infiniti Q50 owner / Endicott, New York
The Q50 lawsuit alleges Nissan/Infiniti knows the braking system is defective but conceals that fact so the automaker can keep selling the cars. Mr. Brand also says to keep from repairing the brake problems under warranty, the automaker tells its dealers to make changes to the cars that do nothing to fix them.
The lawsuit further alleges dealers tell owners nothing is wrong with the brakes even when the owners know better.
As for the cause of the Q50S brake problems, the lawsuit alleges the 2014-2016 Infiniti Q50S brakes use pads that are damaged by heat when the pads contact the rotors, causing the pads to wear out and the rotors to warp.
The Infiniti Q50 sport brake pad lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court Central District of California - Steven Brand v. Nissan North America Inc.
I just bought a used '14 Q50S Hybrid with 38K miles. Had full service history from dealership throughout the lease before I bought it.
Rotors were resurfaced twice before and I just noticed the brakes were vibrating over 40mph when braking. Took it to the dealer who determined the rotors were under-spec and just replaced the two rear ones for free.
From what I read and my buddy who has a large car-shop in the state Nissans have horrible rotors and warping issues. One harsh stop and they are warped.
If these new sets start to vibrate, I'm just going to upgrade to slotted or cross drilled aftermarket sets. NO need to beat yourself up over crappy OEM stuff. Same thing with Hondas too from what I hear.
I just had my rotors resurfaced for the second time and it's still vibrating. I'm about to make the dealer near me replace the rears for free after paying $800 for this and the problem still exists.
I am not sure what's the issue actually but it seems the OEM rotor is horrible after you had a harsh stop. I had the problem and dealer has been resurfacing the rotor. I had my rotor resurfaced on last December and I also replaced the pads with Akebono performance pad and flushed the brake fluid. Not sure which one is the OEM one (my guest it is proact one). This time, I haven't had it. I had it done outside instead of dealership. Hopefully, it won't show up now but so far so good. After replacing the pads, they seem more grabby.
This problem exists on the old G37 (non sport) and the Q50 (non sport). I had this issue on my old 2009 G37x and now on my 2014 Q50. The only solution is to buy aftermarket cross-drilled or slotted rotors. They last longer because they don't overheat, fade and warp that quickly.
Had the same with my maxima. replace with aftermarket and ebc red didn't bother with the dealer. Been feeling it on the Q, don't know what to buy yet. Both less than 10,000 miles.
Yep, same. On my old G37x I went with an aftermarket set of rotors and pads. On this Q, I did the same.
My mechanic friend speculated that the brake design (especially non-sport) that Infiniti did called for rotors that were too thin and the rears had poor cooling. Those factors together would lead to faster deformation under medium to high braking effort.
My next solution? Buy another brand of car.
