I also thought that tensioner applies a fixed tension but in my obervation, either it isn't or something else is causing it to move (belt?) I've seen a few other OCD folks mentioned it (in FB).

Maybe a pic would help. I'll post it when i get home later.
I understand now what you are saying. Maybe it is just related to expansion and contraction of the belt due to heat? I'm sure the belt is designed to minimize that effect, but I'm sure it does and expand and contract depending on temperature in the engine.

Hopefully no dealership is that scummy for a known issue but you never know.

If it does end up looking like a conclusive way to solve the problem then I think we will all breath a sigh of relief. Hah

Yea let's hope my dealership is cool about it.. But exactly! A definite fix would be nice

I'll post back here in a few days with an update

If it was due to thermal contraction/expansion then shouldn't it be a little loose when the engine is hot? Not really an issue nor a big deal as I believe everything is still normal. Just trying to understand why the auto-tensioner would appear to loosen it up a bit (from cold start) as if the belt elongates a little bit and then back to the tighter position when engine is fully warmed up. And the harder pulls I make, the more it goes to the left of the indicator indicating less slack (tighter).

Anyways let me just show you guys the pictures I took and feel free to state your opinions.

I've read one guy had the exact same kind of noise at same RPM's on a 2017 and had his AC belt replaced which fixed the problem but I'm curious if anyone has dealt with this, Thank you!
Hey guys for anyone curious about the outcome of my 2018 Q50's issues I'll briefly explain what happened below..
So the deaership explained the TSB is specifically for early 2016 models through 2017 models only, and that they still checked to ensure there was proper alignment which was good.

The issue was actualy a leaking water pump which may have led to a glazed fluid on the accessory belt creating the noises I was hearing.

I'm now curious if any other 2018 Q50 owners have had this occur or if this was an outlier case

Yes, there have been a few posts about leaking water pumps causing the belts to squeal due to contaminating the belt surface. Nothing widespread though.

Considering the length of the serpentine belt, a mm or two is not much movement. Still, that does seem counter-intuitive. Perhaps it's intentional to prevent belt slippage when the engine heats up? Dunno.

There's one guy on FB who had his belt snapped this week. It's a 2018 q50. The indicator on the tensioner (with the belt off) looked roughly half a cm (~5mm) away from D range. That tells me that a little movement translates to, i don't know, maybe x2-x3 at least on the belt itself. I also think there's a little slack as part of its normal tolerance.

Was that to the left or right of the "D" range on the indicator? How did you arrive at 2-3 times stretch on the belt itself?

There should be a small amount of play in the belt to be sure, however by 2-3x I assume you mean when the engine is running and under load you may see the variance between points grow too 10mm+?

I'm not sure there is a proven correlation between belts snapping and where the indicator is on the belt tensioner. Those that have had their belt fail, have reported a lot of different conditions related to the tensioner.
