Last year, I went to my Jr. College's website, got myself a ".edu" email address as an alumni, and signed up for Prime. As a "student", my first 6 months (I think it was) was free. And then half off annually, until "graduation" which I selected the furthest out possible date (2022, I think?). I hate hate hate annual fees but I figured for half off, I'll go for it (half off $100 at the time, now half off $120
). I enjoy the free 2-day (I think now 1-day?) shipping or the $1 digital credit (buy .mp3 songs, rent videos. etc.) if I elect to forgo the fast shipping, which I usually do - I'm patient. The kids watch Amazon steaming content almost every night so I think we get our $ worth. When my half off "student" deal expires, I think I will cancel and I will have my wife sign up with a .edu account to continue for another 4-5 years.
It also bumped my existing Amazon card from 2% off to 5% off with each purchase. Also, every once in a while (although it has been a while, now that I think about it), Ama will send Prime members a just-because $10 off. So, those things help to pay for itself.
It's not easy obtaining a .edu e-mail address, but if you can, and if you want to, it can be a big savings.
