Ok, so that’s not what this car was meant for, BUT someone has to be doing it. I love my car and the drivability it offers as a sports sedan. The problem is I’d like to tow a very small boat (like weighing as much as a jet ski) with it.

Has anyone towed anything like a jet ski, small boat etc? What hitch did you use? The hitches I see are class 1 with limited support. I’ve been told by some that a class one hitch has been bent by too many bicycles and a speed bump.

I was quoted $700 for a tow/trailer hitch instal shop they could modify the class 1 with reinforced metal and it would have no problem. BUT that’s $550 more than what a standard hitch costs.

What are you guys that are ballsy enough to tow with this beast doing?

I tow with my Cummins. That said, I would bet... well, not my life, but probably someone else's, depending on how annoying they are... that those who bent a class one hitch with too many bicycles did so because of leverage by design. This is not an issue you will have with a trailer, as the weight will be distributed between the rear axle of the car and the axle of the trailer, not cantilevered out over nothing placing all of the strain directly on the hitch. A bike rack and a trailer are apples and oranges really, I wouldn't worry about the hitch with jetski weight behind it. I would, however, carefully read the owner's manual about towing, because I can't believe the transmission/suspension of this car is designed with those forces in mind. But I could be wrong, I haven't looked into it. Good luck.

Car manufacturer's recommendations for towing are always covered in the owner's manual.

I also tow with my Cummins. No way would I hook up my trailer to a Q50. It's for my yard tractor and motorcycles. It's a heavy utility trailer with car tires and a heavy ramp. My boat trailer was lighter.
If the combined weight was around 500 lbs I don't see why it would be a problem other than Infiniti says not to tow with it, as Avedis53 pointed out.
I would not have a tongue weight of over around 100 lbs.

I recall a similar thread form a couple years ago. In the US, the owners manual explicitly says no but I recall a Canadian owner saying his manual said yes to some small amount. Yes, I am too lazy to search for it.

Every Nissan car I've ever owned has reported 1000lbs maximum towing weight including passengers/cargo, as others have said consult the owners manual for confirmation
the loads may have changed for the Q50.

This is from the German Infiniti homepage for my Hybrid S:

Weight: 1,812/1,842/1,862 kg depending on configuration (3,995/4,060/4,105 lbs)
Towing (without and with trailer brake): 750/1,500 kg (1,650/3,300 lbs)
Trunk space: 400 l (14.12 cf)
Tank: 70 l (18.5 gal)

I posted this in another thread about towing. Page 10-22 in the Owner's Manual under "Towing A Trailer", it simply says in large, bold letters, "Do not tow a trailer with your vehicle.".

You all can disregard this and tow the Queen Mary for all I care but I won't. Taking a car in for a engine/transmission problem with a tow hitch on the back is asking for your warranty to be denied (at least in the US).

The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (US & Canada) state that the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) and GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) be posted on FMVSS label on the B pillar next to the door latch.

GVWR - maximum total combined weight of the unloaded vehicle, passengers, luggage, hitch, trailer tongue load and any other optional equipment.

GAWR - maximum weight (load) limit specified for the front or rear axle.

Curb Weight - vehicle weight including: standard and optional equipment, fluids, emergency tools, and spare tire assembly. This weight does not include passengers and cargo.

Using a 2018 RS AWD as an example:

Curb Weight = 3,993 lbs
GVWR = 5,159 lbs
GAWR = Front - 2646 lbs Rear - 2546 lbs

Vehicle Capacity Limit - This is the maximum combined weight of occupants and cargo that can be loaded into the vehicle. If the vehicle is used to tow a trailer, the trailer tongue weight must be included as part of the cargo load. This information is located on the Tire and Loading Information label next to the FMVSS label.

If you subtract the Curb Weight from the GVWR, you would expect this to be the Vehicle Capacity Limit.

5,159 - 3,993 = 1,166 lbs

However the Tire and Loading Information label on the 2018 RS AWD states a Vehicle Capacity Limit of 900 lbs. This more conservative weight limit is the one that matters.

I think the important thing to consider is that all the definitions of these acronyms (GVW, GVWR, GAWR, GCWR) are standard government boilerplate and do not take into consideration specific manufacturer's designated limitations. I would expect the manufacturer's recommendations to supersede these numbers.

The standard GVWR definition includes hitch and trailer tongue load and that number would lead you to believe that one can tow a trailer if the Vehicle Capacity Limit isn't exceeded. The fact that the Owner's Manual specifically states not to tow a trailer with a Q50 would take precedence in any warranty issues that may occur due to engine and/or transmission damages from towing.

So as the OP said: "Who's ballsy enough to tow with this beast?". Not me. The car was not designed to tow and I believe them.

If it's not in US-warranty, I wouldn't tow. But still wondering...

Well the OP actually never listed his model, and the Hybrid version of the Q50 has a very different transmission
than what is found in any other Q50.

So it's not exactly great to use it as a point of comparison to other models.

Sorry for not being clearer! That applies to all Q50s sold in Germany – 2.0, 2.2, 3.0 and 3.5 (automatic and manual). Just used mine as representative...

Towing isn't about how much engine power you have. There's more to it than that.

Forgot GCWR. Gross combined weight rating. Obviously does not apply to US Q50.

GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) - The maximum total weight rating of the vehicle, passengers, cargo, and trailer.

Sorta. It has a dry clutch, then the motor/generator then a wet clutch. I think the rest behind that is the same. Still, without a torque convertor it is different enough.

Different line pressure and a few other changes as well so the transmission is rated for more torque than the 3.7L transmission.

Transplanted Brit living in CA? I figured that's what you meant, but I don't think I've ever heard an American call a travel trailer a "caravan". I was referencing Dodge's minivans.
