A new naming convention takes hold with the 2014 Infiniti Q50, replacing the G37 sedan at the bottom of the Nissan luxury subsidiary’s model line, but a revived letter and an attention-grabbing face lift fail to solve its biggest problem: the competition.
Beginning life a decade ago as the G35, the entry-level luxury sedan from Infiniti continues to toil in the shadow of the all-singing, all-dancing BMW 3 Series. Though Johan de Nysschen, president of the Infiniti brand, did not mention that or any other competitor by name in his address on 14 January at the Detroit auto show, the Bavarian sedan loomed large between his teleprompter-served lines...

Not only will it have to go up against the BWW 3 series but the Cadillac ATS as well, which are both amazing cars.

Infiniti seems to be putting some real value into their cars and bringing it closer to what brand like BMW and Mercedes have, maybe this will be as good as a 3 series, we'll have to wait and see.

There is definitely an elitism for BMWs. Especially the 3 series sedan as they sort of invented that segment.

They do make great cars but up until now the complaint has always been the cheap interior. The new interior is a nice upgrade so it makes it difficult to challenge the newer BMWs moreso now. But I really don't like the steering feel on the 335i that I drove.. Maybe I just need more seat time though.

I don't really get the article though
The BMW 3 Series has met every challenge brought by Audi and Mercedes-Benz, as well as by Japanese and American brands. Like Lexus, Acura and, increasingly, Cadillac, Infiniti can no longer trumpet cash savings over BMW’s 3 Series in its advertising. It must rely on the drive, and above all, the slippery calculus of “premium”, to woo buyers.
To this, Nakamura noted that the brand would rely on “Infinitiness” to distinguish its offering in the marketplace. Whether that is a winning substance remains for drivers to decide.
I don't get it. Where are the facts to support?

While I agree with you I feep like they're way over priced. Yes BMW's are great cars. I wont argue with that. But $55,000+ for a modestly priced 335i x-drive? I think they charge out the butt for their cars because they can.

I've had 3 G's and 1 bmw 335 rwd 6mt (2007) and to be honest if the new f30 335 were the same price as the G/Q (similarly equipped), I would probably just get the 3 series. The game for Infiniti has always been that it combines a lot of good things into a very good value package. This new car looks promising though. Can't wait to drive it.

I have considered one of those 07 335i's in the past but past up on it because if the issues and what i found to be a cheap interior. Not the same though on the new 335i but they cost a pretty penny. So my new high hopes are in the Infiniti Q50, I'll just have to see it in person at the auto show.

That cadillac ATS will put up a good fight in my opinion along with the 3 series. With bmw setting the bar only time will tell how close of a battle it will be with the new infiniti Q50

I like the ATS on paper, but I do not like their styling. I have heard great things about it, and its a great step forward for Cadillac in getting rid of the perception the only old people and gang bangers drive their cars. I'm just not a huge fan of the angular styling.

I dunno, you might be in the minority there.

I think the angular styling is winning over a lot of people due to the fact that it is so unique and immediately recognizable.

When Cadillac decided to change things up dramatically in their brand language almost 6 years ago, they knew they were taking a chance. I do understand how some wouldn't be into the look, but even I must admit, there's a lot to appreciate in some of their designs, especially in the new XTS...With this, it's almost Cadillac (or GM in general) has been trying to re-establish a defining look to a traditional American car.

Apparently what kills the ATS is the transmission. The 6 speed transmission is terrible and the CUE system is worse.
Not everyone feels the same way about it.

I think those two have been the main, albeit only complaints I've seen as well, but I don't believe they're as big of an issue as you're making them out to be.

Have you had a chance to test one?

Yeah I know I'm in the minority, but it could be that I'm use to the curvy flowing designs and haven't gotten use to the angular design yet. A lot of people have the ATS where I live so I assume that its a good car, I have yet to test drive one though.

Ive heard various things about the CUE from car reviewers that dont seem to like it.

On the topic of BMW vs Infiniti I also worry about BMW reliability. How does it's reliability stats compare to that of Infiniti? My dream car has always been a BMW M3 but not only is it $$$ but to pay out those $$$ and then have issues is just a deal breaker. Alternatively I could buy a used one but then there is little or no warranty left and hence no coverage for the lack of reliability.

The M3s brand new don't have many issues. If you buy older M3s there may be things to replace (which might be expensive) but I don't think I've heard of people complaining M3s being unreliable. I know a friend who owns an E46 M3 and it is still running strong.
