SRS Warning Light

My SRS warning light came on today and doesn't turn off even after cycling the ignition. I'll be headed for the dealership for warranty inspection/repair but was wondering if anyone has experienced an SRS warning light and what was found to be the problem?

This may sound silly, but withdraw your seat belts all the way out and retract a couple of times for ALL of them. Both while running and not. Then restart the car n see if that helps. Also, click in and out each seat belt .. not sure the back seats are part of the seatbelt system.

I believe that is part of the supplemental restraint system. Crud on a connection? Might be worth a try.

The rear belts aren't part of the SRS. I had my wife sit in the passenger seat while I started the car. We both used seats belts during this entire troubleshooting effort. The SRS warning light went out after 7 seconds as it should but the front passenger air bag status remained on, indicating that the passenger air bag would not deploy. She got out, I restarted the car and the SRS warning light stayed on and the front passenger air bag status light was on. I got out and plopped my fat ass in the passenger seat while she started the car. The SRS light goes out and the front passenger air bag status turned off, indicating the passenger air bag was activated and everything was normal.

So it would appear that there is a problem with the occupant detection system control unit/sensor, wiring or connectors that are mounted on the bottom of the passenger seat. While the SRS is designed to disregard the weight of a bag, or child or small adult(don't know what the weight limit is), my wife weighs enough to activate the air bag as the passenger air bag status light turned off with her sitting in the seat previously.

Hopefully, the service department has some of those control units in inventory. I'll be calling them on Monday to schedule an appointment.

That or a lot of Ben & Jerry's for your wife!!!

Funny thing was I told her she'd have to gain weight (she's 115 lbs) or no air bag for her. The idea appealed to her somehow.

Story time:

They had a B&J seasonal flavor on sale so I got 10 pints (back when I ate icecream) on the checkout counter. I said to the cashier "If my wife gains 20 lbs she gets SSDI." and laughed.
I got a head slap as we left the store. *I* thought it was funny. ?I guess she didn't!?
That's what you get for spouting off in other threads about how problem free your Q has been.

Why do I seem to remember this topic in the past...someone having an issue with the sensor in the seat? The fix will probably require a new seat for $2500 and complete dashboard removal to get to the control module for this system.

It will be a nice errand for a retiree with nothing better to do. Skip breakfast and make sure you hit their complimentary snack bar hard. Where do you have to go for an Infiniti dealer?

I forgot to knock on wood when I said that. According to the SM, the passenger seat occupant detection system control unit and sensor are replaceable, so a new seat wouldn't be required. If it's the air bag diagnosis sensor unit, it's located underneath the center console assembly between the seats. If it's the integral switch, then it's dashboard removal time.

Hopefully, this is a one day job as it's about a 2 1/2 hour drive to Beaverton Infiniti from Newport...with no airbags.

Have a safe trip. Your plan for killing time for the day? If they don't have the needed part(s), will they let you leave in a safety-compromised car or force you to take a loaner?

Good question. I think they'll give me a loaner to drive until the car is fixed but I'll know more when I talk to the service department on Monday. I use to live up around Portland so I have friends up there and there's also plenty of places to shop cars as there are a ton of dealerships on Canyon Way auto row where the Infiniti dealership is located. Maybe I'll go test drive a M3 and M5 at the BMW dealership.

There was a campaign (recall?) on that issue some time ago. Did yours get done?

And what is with that passenger presence detection system anyway? This Q50 is my third car in ten years that has had a recall.

There is no recall for the 2018 Q50 regarding this that I'm aware of. The system detects if a person above a certain weight is sitting in the passenger seat so that the passenger-side air bag will be activated. If anyone knows what that weight is, I'd sure like to know.

Yup. I forgot you are driving a newer model.

I was pretty sure the weight was either 50 or 55 lbs. but the following article mentions 110 lbs. There are a lot of variables here though. Body shape, seating position etc.

At 115 pounds, my wife is at the lower limit if Infiniti followed that guideline. I'm fairly certain that the system activated the airbag previously when she was sitting in the seat. Still, if the calibration drifted due to seat usage, it could need to be initialized again. There is a zero point reset procedure for doing this any time a seat is replaced or removed and reinstalled in the service manual.

However, the fact that I get a supplemental airbag warning light with no one in the seat tells me something in the system is wonky. The warning light means none of the airbags are operational in the car as well as no seat belt pre-tensioner action if I read the service manual correctly.

Will be dropping the car off ASAP after making an appointment on Monday.
Keep us posted.
You should mention that you are concerned about driving a car such a great distance in sketchy condition...what if you were to have an accident? Maybe they will send a truck for it with a loaner vehicle on the back.

While that would be ideal, I doubt they'll do that for me after the letter I sent to the General Manager protesting the jerking around they put me through when I was buying the car. We'll see though.
Taking the car in tomorrow. The service tech said it's typically a wiring/connector issue in the seat instead of a control unit/sensor problem but if it takes more than the day to repair then they'll give me a loaner to drive home.
Excellent
It turns out I was correct in my diagnosis. The control unit/sensor module needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, they couldn't get one until tomorrow, so I don't know how late in the day it will get to be before they complete the repair. I may have to wait until Thursday since there is no sense in leaving here until they verify they have fixed the problem.

I was given a QX-30 as a loaner. I think it is a 2018 but I'm not sure. What a mixed bag that thing is. The 2.0 turbo is a complete dog with meager acceleration. It has a 7-speed DCT but with that gutless engine it doesn't matter. The car actually has little plastic paddle shifters but given the engine, they're worthless. Shifting down and punching it doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

After spending a couple hours on the freeway, I grew weary of fighting the steering as it would constantly drift slightly left or right. I guess I am spoiled by DAS which holds your steering line without the little corrections that I dealt with on the QX-30.

The seats were made of something Infiniti calls Fibretec. It's probably made of recycled plastic 2-liter soda bottles. I don't care for it as it looks cheap. The seats are too narrow and do not adjust as well as the Q50 seats but they were the entry level seats. I found them to be uncomfortable.

The interior looks similar to my wife's Mazda3 in design. Definitely not as good as the Q50.

On the plus side, the panoramic moonroof would be great in the Q50. The backup camera and Around View system cameras have a lot better resolution and brightness compared to the Q50. The audio system was Bose...nuff said.

The side mirrors automatically fold in when the ignition is turned off. There is also a switch on the driver's door to fold the mirrors whenever you want.

Infiniti put Continental ProContact TX SSR A/S Grand Touring RFTs on the it instead of the Dumbflops. They not as bad as the Dumbflop but they still have RFT issues.

These were just things that jumped out at me while driving the QX-30. Bottom line for me...I'd never buy it. It looks nice but it's underwhelming. I can see why Infiniti ditched it in 2019 after only two years. Underpowered and unremarkable.
