Is anyone clear on which service Infiniti uses for traffic/weather data ? the Lexus IS for example uses the HD Radio digital signal format which is free and does not require a subscription. Is a Sirius/XM subscription required ?

Yes, it uses Nav Traffic from Sirius XM. It's an add-on subscription for about $4.00 per month. I drive in L.A. so to me it's a no brainer.

Are you 100% sure. How do you know it's from xm and not hd?
Either way I'll probably keep it cause its a nice feature for sure

Disappointed That The 50 Doesn't Have The Free Traffic Service

Just joined the forum looking for info. Thought about using the forum name, "Tons Of Torque", because, well, it does have that.

Anyway, I was really disappointed to find out my new Q doesn't have the new free traffic service attached to the HD Radio. Two other cars I looked at have it... the IS350 and I can't remember the other one.

I will not continue the XM subscription past the trial period. I need another subscription like I need a hole in the head.

I have some issues that I'm going to research a bit, do some lurking, and then I'll post some questions and feedback.

Cheers!

Cheers.

There's free traffic info available over FM. Infiniti could use it if they wanted to. My TomTom uses that and I don't pay for traffic info on that. I don't know if the info is quite as up-to-the-minute, but I bet XM gets their data from the same source. There was talk a while back that Google was going to use a combination of the data from public sources plus crowdsourced data from Android devices. I don't know if that's happening though.

If XM could combine the road sensor public data with actual data from cars that are driving around and report back to XM, then they'd have something worth paying for.

I'm hoping Waze will get into the car app game; or InRix. Or better yet, Trapster. :) All offer real-time traffic data plus a lot more. Those would be perfect InTouch apps. I doubt it happens though.

I find SXM traffic to be on point in the NY area. It works really well and up to date. The extra $4 a month on top of the SXM subscription is well worth it.

Point is that Infiniti is not offering what others are this year - HD Traffic & Weather, free subscriptions, Apple 'IOS in the car' are all examples of technical innovations not available in the 2014 Q50... my bet is that they will be there for 2015 models.

I don't want iOS. I'm not an Apple fan in any way, shape or form. As for HD Traffic and Weather, that doesn't appeal to me either. Generally XM is a more robust feature, and honestly, for $4/mo - which is built in to my XM subsciption - I could care less.

In my experience, you get more with XM than the free options. So what you call a technical innovation, might be great for "free" and cheap cars, but for a premium vehicle like the Q50, I'd take the premium service like XM any day.

You're not getting it bnb-ryan... not everyone needs or even wants XM let alone the Infiniti add-on requirement for something that others implement for free ! "premium vehicle" ? ... the Q50 appears to have been rushed to the market - technical shortcomings and now problems galore - its disappointing - for me I was ready to buy, but now I'm on hold...

Ill be honest. I know about the shortcomings in some areas, but i'm truly enjoying the car so far. As far as the driving experience, I think the car is great, and I just have to be patient when it comes to the "goodies".

I've owned a Q45, G37, M37, EX37, and now the Q. I can tell you that so far it has been the best Infiniti I have owned. Still it is a bit sad to see all the shortcomings.

Thanks

Yeah - I'm not keeping my XM subscription after free trial period either. So - even if traffic is extra $4 / mo - I don't want to pay for the base XM service. My Iphone + bluetooth connection gives me all the tunes I need. So - looks like I'm stuck checking google maps / traffic view on my iphone before heading out on the road. Maybe we'll get google maps as an app? Doubt it.... cause then Infinity couldn't charge $1400 for Nav package :)
