The long awaited update:
Finally got the 2019+ InTouch infotainment system working in place of the last gen InTouch. Honestly have to say this thing is awesome. Super responsive, CarPlay, genuinely fantastic navigation system (prefer it over Waze if not for the law enforcement aspect - also gets data over wifi/hotspot instead of an SD card), and all around better experience.

Been waiting a while to share because I was waiting on the lower screen assembly (didn't realize they changed the resolution :/ )

How it works
I designed and built an adapter harness to connect all of the various old modules (DCU/AVCU/NAV) into the new consolidated AVCU. Then it was just a matter of adapting the pin outs.

The only difference that allows this system to be fully functional is my custom TCU module. It connects to the vehicle CAN bus and then connects to a separate terminated CAN line to the new AV system. This allows me to modify the few CAN signals that were needed to make the system work as though it was in a 2020.

Below are some pics. Open to any questions or comments. I can also upload a video. The new system is very responsive and not laggy in the slightest. Everything works as OEM right now except a few misconfigurations in programming that I am using CONSULT to remove tomorrow (I don't have driver assist stuff, just gonna turn that off)

PS: I love having CarPlay with Waze full screen on the top screen and the currently playing song on the bottom. Lets me see the song info AND a full screen map.

I would like to know more about this as I would love to have this same setup on my 2015 Hybrid which is the Same exact av and infotainment system as the 2016.

Tell me how much and when you'll be ready to sell your first unit. I'll go buy a DCU and A/V Control Unit when you let me know. I'm dead serious.

Will need to look into the hybrid. Starting with only VR30 + BOSE vehicles since it's the best testing platform as it's the same config as my car. Once that's confirmed I can start researching other configurations. Biggest issue will be having a Hybrid test car for a day or two.

The hybrid has everything that the VR30 has including the Bose system. But still I know you would need a test car. But I think your current config should work just fine with my system if you sold a separate kit.

You and @Ddnspider are my first round picks for all of the custom TCU testing. Spider is more interested in the other module functionality (CAN/GPIO integration + cloud logging subsystem) but I would also love to get a unit out to you for testing the IT1 -> IT2 since you seem like the kind of guy who can test and troubleshoot new tech. There are a few things I am still adding backwards compatibility for (IT2 <-> pre-2019 cluster support, USB support)

Parts Needed:
  • Display Unit (not a DCU, it's now a dumb 12v + LVDS display thank god)
  • 2020+ AV Control Unit (new ITM, very well made)
  • 2020+ Integral Switch (oddly enough the most difficult and expensive part to source, need a 2019+ IS that is 1080p)
  • My wiring harness + TCU
  • [If you want working USB] USB sub-harness
  • CONSULT programming (might be able to work it out with a cool tech)
These parts are quite expensive alone (oddly enough, the actual brains in the AV control unit can be had for as low as $120, it's the screens that cost so much), however sourcing the parts from a salvage car can be very beneficial. I got my parts for 750 total but it included a full Q50 Main Wiring Harness for me to dissect as well as extra antennas. I think once I sell the factory stack I will only be about ~$550 in the hole ignoring my previous reverse engineering projects.

Yeah I feel like much of it should work on the AV front, but I am worried about the following:
  • Hybrid infotainment has hybrid specific apps that will no longer be available with the new system
  • The hybrid combination meter is significantly different from the VR30 one
Now, if you're willing to give up the hybrid infotainment apps, I might be able to cook up some glue code to make the system work with the car anyways. Might just have to move some settings onto the TCU module settings app instead of the car itself. If you and a few other hybrid owners think that tradeoff is worth it, I think we can go for it. First step will be to have a few hybrid owners buy TCU modules and send me some CAN logs so I can pour over them.

Does Android Auto work when plugged in via USB?
The USB system is different on the new platform. You will need to buy these parts or source them. The USB system on the new Q is a dumb box that connects to a powered USB control box. I will be designing a harness to add this functionality.

CarPlay is supported wirelessly, however Android Auto wireless is not supported - so you will need the USB assembly.

Another Note
This upgrade can add navigation to non-nav cars. Just need to buy the GPS antenna and a nav-capable AVCU. Pretty neat possibility thanks to the reduction in modules.

So you've sourced adapters for the OEM GPS antenna to connect to the AVCU?

CONSULT programming? This could be a problem with a dealership.

Well funny enough, the FSM documentation was not correct on the antenna connectors or the LVDS connectors. They plugged right in.

With changing to a 2019+ system, how is the data connection for maps, etc... handled? Is it an integrated 4G connection? Or will this system have to rely on a connected mobile phone hotspot or similar?

In some cases. The dealer near me is willing to program it, but I am working on a solution. I am going to INFINITI today and will be recording the CONSULT programming signals sent over CAN. Going to use the info that Evan @HPT gave me.

It's the same issue you get when you install a new factory DCU. As always, you can skip this if you find an AV control unit from a similar spec car. In my case everything is correct except for Around View Monitor/FEB.
