What's this doing in a 2016 Q50

The long awaited update:
Finally got the 2019+ InTouch infotainment system working in place of the last gen InTouch. Honestly have to say this thing is awesome. Super responsive, CarPlay, genuinely fantastic navigation system (prefer it over Waze if not for the law enforcement aspect - also gets data over wifi/hotspot instead of an SD card), and all around better experience.

Been waiting a while to share because I was waiting on the lower screen assembly (didn't realize they changed the resolution :/ )

How it works
I designed and built an adapter harness to connect all of the various old modules (DCU/AVCU/NAV) into the new consolidated AVCU. Then it was just a matter of adapting the pin outs.

The only difference that allows this system to be fully functional is my custom TCU module. It connects to the vehicle CAN bus and then connects to a separate terminated CAN line to the new AV system. This allows me to modify the few CAN signals that were needed to make the system work as though it was in a 2020.

Below are some pics. Open to any questions or comments. I can also upload a video. The new system is very responsive and not laggy in the slightest. Everything works as OEM right now except a few misconfigurations in programming that I am using CONSULT to remove tomorrow (I don't have driver assist stuff, just gonna turn that off)

UPDATE:
I have ordered a 2020+ gauge cluster to do some final testing with. This gets the firmware much closer to completion!

Where are you with regards to the rest of the hardware? Antenna connectors? USB port compatibility? I don't have a 2020+ gauge cluster. How does that fit into finishing my kit?

The 2020 gauge cluster is just for reverse engineering the 2020 specific signals and having test hardware on my desk. The module will be configured at initial boot for your model year. This is the main checklist.
  1. Seeing if the 2020+ units show CarPlay navigation directions while driving. I noticed that starting CarPlay navigation cancels the factory navigation route. So I want to investigate if this is an OEM feature that is failing due to an unhandled flag like media was. Not much documentation available on the topic. If it is a supported feature, I will backport it, if the factory system just cancels nav and doesn't show HUD - then I'll leave it alone.
  2. Testing my new message display system where the module can show messages on the music page.
  3. I had an idea to repurpose the navigation display as a boost gauge. When approaching a turn, there is a vertical bar that has a high refresh rate. This would be pretty neat imo.
As for the hardware, I am doing some hardware testing of a possible design for OEM USB ports to work. I have been reverse engineering the 2020+ OEM USB module and I believe I might be able to get the factory ports working, plus the new head unit uses standard mini-USB cables so it's very easy to produce and test. The only thing that will not work is the SD card, but there's really no use for it. For the antenna connectors, I am currently testing the 3D printed option, but I need to find good contactors for them.

Just finished reverse engineering CAN side. Now I am reverse engineering the AV-CAN side. Very exciting stuff.

Great work @nickdaria! Really happy to see kits like you're putting out for pre-2020 Q50/Q60's. Well done sir!

Bad news: got a buddy to let me use the CONSULT laptop to reprogram the AV unit. It's refusing to program due to a very unhelpful error that it doesn't match my car's specs. Drove 2 hours to try it. Going to have to use CONSULT clones or reverse engineer the CONSULT reprogram mechanism. This would be worth it though because I could make an open source tool to help reprogram AV units.

I’ve been hoping you’d make a consult clone! Name your price!

😉 little fun with the cluster
New video by Nick Daria

Fuel and airbag are discrete inputs, so ignore those. this is all full CAN emulation. also fixed speed unit after this clip.

Oh and I remapped coolant gauge to boost. Works great, might do it on my Q.

Lol you're having too much fun with this!

What started as a means to update the older infotainment to the newer solution with carplay and Android auto had obviously grown in scope.

What are your overall goals and scope now with the final solution?

I personally was most interested in Android auto but the extra features are intriguing. Jb4 integration? Ecutek?

The cluster is to confirm compatibility with old and new clusters even with my firmware.

I have felt like I've been in the home stretch for a while, but I'm finally getting to a good stopping point where I can send the ton man his first kit.

Hey now, you wanted to wait for a completed and tested kit. I have a tester (my buddy in our local car club) with a Q60 running around with it. When I release this thing I want it to be plug n' play for all configurations of 2016-2019 Q50s with no per-module programming. That way the kits can be easily resold without complication.

Biggest hurdle as of now is connectors and sourcing. I have everything needed for a batch of 5 aside from 2, however I am talking with Metra about sourcing some.

I'm also waiting for the second coming and it's a tossup as to which will happen first.

Don't forget the installation video as part of your kit. I believe you mentioned you were going to make one.

Add to the list a complete redesign for the GTR (or Q50), and all of a sudden the second coming doesn't seem like such a long wait.

If things go well, Av you will be the second to test drive the new system.
