I've got it too. Q50S, build date 10/13. Stinks like onion. Had it in to the dealer for 5k oil change today and they knew of the issue. Service Advisor said issue with A/C but I don't think that's the case. I'm thinking an adhesive or material problem. I will file a case with Infiniti as well. Mine is worse on hot days - and we've gotten a LOT of them in NorCal lately. No stink in trunk but definitely around the sunroof.

Mike
Same problem with my car. The stink is overpowering and gets much worse on hot days. Can't wait for my lease to be over.
Infiniti f..d up big time with this car.

Good Preliminary Results

Like many of you, I love the Q50...but it smells like onions. I've had the Q50 for about a month. Mine is in about the middle of the smell factor (it is tolerable on a short ride, but longer rides tend to make my eyes burn with a mild headache). The smell has been localized as coming from the left front of the sunroof; which makes sense as to I seem to mind it more as a driver than a passenger.

This week, I've tried a combination of things and, so far, have had some positive promising results.

1). I took Griot's Interior cleaner and cleaned the entire headliner with it.

2). I stuffed 4-5 dryer sheets between the sunroof and the sliding door and kept it closed to the outside and closed to the inside of the car.

3). I, liberally, sprayed Griot's Leather Interior scent in all four corners of the interior of the car (under the seats, etc.).

I let the car sit outside and unopened for two days in 85+ F. heat. Today I opened it, and for the first time in a month... I can't smell the onions at all. What I smell is a faint odor of the dryer sheets at the top of the car and a stronger smell of Leather, overall. Actually, it's pretty pleasant and close to what I want a new car to smell like.

I'll report back in a few days to see if this is able to "keep the onions at bay".

I had the tubes and 2 front pillars removed a month ago. That did not completely remove the onion smell. However, today I tried something different. I bought a product called
Clear Air, for AC vents. I sprayed it under the sunroof headliner instead of in the AC vents. I pulled down the headliner and used the red spray tube it came with , so I could target certain areas.

I think it helped a lot. I don't smell anything any more from that area. I just did it today, so only time will tell if I eliminated the odor.

NotHappy, where is the drain tube? In the front corners?

I tried looking for them a week or two ago, but visually couldn't find them.
But then again it's not exactly easy to get your head in there to look from every possible angle and the sun roof tracks / mechanics block a lot of the view.
Do a search for me and you will get diagrams, etc.

Well thank God I didn't have this issue. I would have dropped my car off to the dealership and refused to pick it up until they fixed it. I have a loaded q50s. I live in Miami and it's pretty much hot year round. Never noticed this smell in my car nor any loaner q50 that I've drive. I purchased my car on August 6, 2013 and it has a build date of may 2013. I have about 17200 miles and I drive with windows and sunroof open alot. I also have and unlimited wash pass so my car gets washed often. Almost a year old and I still love the smell of my q50.

The drain tubes are under the headliner so you can't see them but you can smell in each corner around the sunroof and the smell is stronger. Luckily, Sewell Infiniti Dallas replaced the tubes in my car on Friday and my car no longer smells. THANK GOODNESS! No charge and they provided a loaner car.

I am glad to hear not all Q50s have this issue, only ones manufactured after a certain date.

Good Luck to All!

I've read through all 27 pages (was interesting to watch corporate finally own up!) but haven't seen any definitive build-date this was impacting. Was it all builds in 2014, or after Feb-2014, etc.?

Only saw this thread after I test drove a loaded Q50S and didn't notice the smell but wasn't looking for it either.

Thanks.

So it sounds to me like, if your car has this "Onion Smell," you'd know it.....meaning it sounds like a very strong, noticeable thing. So I'm happy that mine does not. I know weather is a factor but it's actually been HOT up here in WA State this past 2 weeks.

I'm glad Infiniti is now responding to this issue. Sort of makes me want to go find one with the Onion Smell and observe it first-hand!

Boy, I still would like that know that date. I posted to this thread a while ago suggesting an informal poll about what the stinky cars have in common and have not gotten an answer. Wondering if I am going to be afflicted or should I have noticed it by now?

Got back from my smell test tonight. Dealer thought I was crazy and they had not received any complaints from any customers. Manager "Who's that guy in the trunk of the Q50s?"

Stuck my head deep in the trunk, nothing. Opened the sunroof and smelled all 4 corners, nothing. Car has new car smell. It has about 150 miles on it and has been in the CT sun since March 2014.

So here are my stats on the car:

Build Date: Feb 2014
Q50S with Deluxe Touring, Navi, Tech
Graphite leather interior

As an aside, I checked the lines on the backup camera, and they came up near immediately once the rear cam came on (which was about 3-5 seconds). Car was off for at least 30 minutes before I turned it on (was test driving q60 convertible RWD - trying to talk myself out of getting that)

So maybe there is something to the load time of the lines when you don't have Tech, almost like it is searching for tech and eventually times out in 2-3 minutes.

Happy to aggregate the stats if people post their build dates and specs.

Thanks! I'll start by repeating mine;

Build date 11/2013. Took delivery 03/24/2014
Q50 (not sport) Hybrid AWD with everything.
Chestnut Bronze with Wheat interior.

No smell yet but I will occasionally get a whiff of something that I can't pin down. Not unpleasant but unusual. Nothing like what has been reported here.

So I took another test drive today with the Mrs. (of the actual car we would be getting) Smelled like new car smell and leather when we got it.

Drove on the highway for a while, then on the way back, turned off the A/C, opened the sunroof and windows and when we parked, she said "I smell very faint garlic and onions" !

Now she did not smell that at all in the Q60S vert we test drove...

I didn't exactly smell it, but I must admit I was feeling a bit off when I got out of the car. I also could not get comfortable in the seat, I'm 5'9 athletic build. I think I found the non "S' seats more comfortable.

I was not expecting this, now reconsidering my options.

You sure you're not predisposed to smelling "something" now and convincing yourself that it's the Onion Effect? Same question applies to your wife.

Sorry getting off topic of this thread.

Play around with the seat adjustments if you drive another Sport.
Everything on the sport seat adjusts.

The Sport seats are much better than the regular seats, but they definitely need to get adjusted to for each individual driver.
It might take a minute or two as well since it had so many adjustments.

Took my car in for the airbag recall today. The service consultant could definitely smell the odor. I chose to close the sliding sunroof shade overnight and then pulled it open once he was sitting in the drivers seat and asked him to sniff the left corner of the moonroof. He definitely smelled it.

We'll see if the lead tech or regional Infiniti folks have anything to say to them...

I really tried both times to adjust the seat every which way, on both test drives on the S. I just couldn't get them to sit/fit right. I drive about 110 miles 3 days a week so i need to be comfortable. We drove over in our 2013 QX56 and I find those seats to be really comfortable.

The S just looked really great sitting there. Surprising how much I'm liking the body now.

Regarding being predisposed to smelling it now, I confess my wife and I have been discussing it, but I think she really did smell it faintly. Sometimes I kick myself for researching the car so much. I read all 27 pages of this thread.

She really wants me to be happy with the choice, and the other car in the running is the Q60 Vert with sport package (it actually say Q60S on it, but i thought that was reserved for the MT).

I have 2009 G37S vert and 2014 Q50S Hybrid AWD. I can tell you that Q50 seats are lot more adjustable and comfortable once you adjust the way you like it. On a long drive I find Q50S lot more comfy. I drive vert when I know I'll enjoy the open air but no more than hr drive. There's not too much difference in G37 Convertible and Q60 convertible.

Update - my dealer in So Cal said that the parts will be generally available in approximately two weeks and that I can bring my car back at that time to get it done - won't need to order anything.

As for my car, it has a build date of 09/13 and I purchased it in 03/14
