Airbag Light

So I brought my 2015 in for an oil service and DAS recall program. When I picked up the car today, they mentioned they replaced the occupant sensor. I guess I didn't realize there was a recall on that item.

So fast forward to tonight as I'm driving home, the airbag light is on. So when I got home I shut the car off, waited 20 minutes, started it again and the light was still on. When I sat in the passenger seat, the light went out. But once I got up, the light came on again.

Do y'all agree that's not the way it's suppose to work?

No wonder you're confused. I read this section in the manual and I'm more confused now than I was before?!

If you read this section in your owner's manual and the rest of the description, I'm not exactly sure how it's supposed to operate vs. the way the recall says it does based on your experience. Maybe they changed the programming for the recall??

Either way, it is confusing but if the light has an 'x' it should be telling you the airbag won't be deploying. If the light is off, one would assume the airbag would deploy. Should be simple right???

I had the issue on my 15 but traded to a 16 recently and haven't looked at the light but I'll start doing so.

1-51 in the 2016 manual:

The front passenger seat is equipped with an occupant classification sensors (weight sensors) that turn the front passenger air bag on or off depending on the weight applied to the front passenger seat. The status of the front passenger air bag (ON or OFF) is indicated by the front passenger air bag status light which is located on the instrument panel.
After the ignition switch is placed in the ON position, the front passenger air bag status light illuminates for about 7 seconds and then turns off or remains illuminated depending on the front passenger seat occupied status. The light operates as follows:
. Unoccupied passenger seat: The light is OFF and the front passenger air bag is OFF and will not inflate in a crash.
. Passenger seat occupied by a small adult, child or child restraint as out- lined in this section: The light illuminates to indicate that the front passenger air bag is OFF and will not
Status light: inflate in a crash.
. Occupied passenger seat and the pas-
senger meets the conditions as out- lined in this section: The light is OFF to indicate that the front passenger air bag is operational.
In addition to the above, certain objects placed on the front passenger seat may also cause the light to operate as de- scribed above depending on their weight.

And per my conversations with the dealer when the light went out when no one was in the passenger seat it was confusing some owners. So for Infiniti to help customers the recall would allow the light to stay on if no one was in the passenger seat in order to help with the confusion, even though if someone had read the owner's manual they would have understood it a little better.

So maybe the issue is with the light and the icon not being clear? So they did reprogram the light with the recall then? I wonder if the 16 manual is updated with the 'new' programming?

So confused. . .

But this is a pretty big deal. I'd like to know that my wife would be protected with the airbag of something ever did happen.

Does anyone have the recall notice that they could post?

Thanks!

unfortunately... THAT is the way it's supposed to work.. post recall... !?

The way it works now actually makes sense, and I'm sure it's even how the G35 worked. When no passenger is in the passenger seat, the light indicating "Passenger Air Bag Off" stays lit. Once there is a passenger, the light turns off. Just avoids confusion as to whether the airbag is on or off.

I hated the old way where the airbag light would always be off. Made me question if it was falsely detecting a passenger (and sometimes it would because the light indicating the passenger doesn't have their seat belt on would be illuminated). No issues since the recall.

Hmm, I am scheduled to get this done in the morning and now rethinking this. I am not sure I actually like having the light on on the dash all the time. I would think that will become annoying over time. I believe in having a warning light on when there is an issue, not when there isn't. Going to have to sleep on it and decide in the morning.

As you can see the logo that lights up shows airbag off so this recall makes complete sense. It's lit when no one is on the seat showing an airbag passenger logo "off" and when someone in on the seats there's no light.

So I got it done and gladly, the light is down low and not that bright, so I have already tuned it out. I'll see if I feel the same when driving at night. I talked to one of the service managers and he did say that there is a problem with the passenger side detection, which affects the activation. It's not just to correct the indication light like I previously thought. Thus he did recommend performing the recall.

I received the notice a couple of months ago, called, and was told they didn't have the part in stock but I would receive a letter in the next couple of months. I called today and was told they've had the part in stock and I could come in any time. <insert eye roll here> so I went in and had it done.
When I got in the car to drive away and saw the light, I had to get out and find the service guy again (nice guy) who told me that what I was seeing was the fix. I laughed and told him that is not a fix, it is a work around and a bad one. The light is supposed to warn of a malfunction. He said basically it is what it is. Honestly, I just laughed it off and chalked it up to the same crap we've had to deal with re: the backup camera, the unreliable electronics, the a/c whine and spontaneous malfunctions, etc. Love the car and overlook the stupid stuff...that's my mantra.

The airbag light is why I came here. Driving home after the update, it was on all the time with nobody in the passenger seat. The light is distracting and too bright for the rest of the dash lights. I always thought it was obvious that the light would only come on if the seat sensed some weight such as a smaller person, but would not come on when the seat is not in use.

Oh well, I'll get used to it I guess.
