The Mercedes C class luxury starts at around $39,000 that would be a alternative to the Infiniti Q50 if the price does go ups.
Yeah, size-wise, price-wise, and engine-wise, only the C350 Sport specifically would compete with Q50. As far as I know, the C350 doesn't come in a hybrid nor does it have AWD as an option. Drivers will have to take that into account. :D

I'm not big fan of Audi because my friends having serious issues with those cars. Starting with falling out pieces of interior and ending with transmission replacement. However I can't compare it with maintenance records of Q50 so let's skip it.

Don't like Audi design in general, for me current A4 looks way too similar to VW and that is not adding value to the brand in my eyes. Also in all measurements A4 is smaller than Q50 and that's important for the guy with kids like me. Unfortunately can't compare dynamic and handling either because did not drive Q50 yet.

The A4 interior room isn't bad. It is pretty roomy for it's size from my experience. I think the design held up quite well but definitely needs a refresh.
Value isn't as good as Infiniti though. You get a roaring 3.7L engine in the Infiniti Q50 BASE!

No one wants a 2.0T out of a Volkswagen at that price! :p

How old are your "friends' Audis?" Are they newer ones (2009+) or older ones?

4-8 years old and one was leased in 2012, latest seems to be better just random sensors failures
This kind of information is important for a lot of people to know.

I don't like to put blanket perceptions of quality over any particular automaker. Having worked in the auto industry, I often see how drastic certain generations of certain cars can often run the gamut when it comes to reliability under any given manufacturer, so, the proper context is always useful.

The thing is. Even if you browse audi and bmw and mercedes forums many guys will openly admit their cars aren't that reliable.

They still love them though. The most problem free car I've owned was an Acura. I don't think anything broke down on my old Acura ever.

+a gabillion! My acuras I have owned through the year were rock solid although my two G's have had only minimal problems having to have the brakes redone a couple times on each and that stupid center console lid having to be replaced 3 times the stupid chrome ring around the lid release button keeps cracking...

I'm considering a S4, S5, and Q50. I have been over at the Audizine forum for about a year and the 3.0 supercharged engine seems the best option for reliability. I think the Audi interior is best in class, though I have not seen the Q50 yet. I think the S5 is one of the best looking coupes on the road. I like the Q50, but I think I'm ready for a different brand after eight years in my G.

The S5 is sweeeet! Just make sure to check out the infotainment controls before you buy. My last test drive of an Audi made me cross that off my list because of that. My wife would never be able to figure it out and I just thought it was clumsy.

Thats summarizes my "problems" with the G37. Just did the rear brakes myself@26K miles.
Total cost $50 (original infiniti rear pads) and 45 minutes. According to my measurements they would have lasted about 35K miles. Dealer wanted $275.

On the 2008 G35S the brakes were fine at 45K miles but the steering wheel
was replaced due to black paint pilling around the controls.

My family/friends have 4 late model Audis, I would never buy one, only lease.

The traction control can be very hard on the rear brakes. If you need them to last longer just disable it when you drive and drift all over town. I had a lot of early replacements on my 04 until I replaced the rotors and got aftermarket Hawk HPS pads.

based on power & engine alone Q50 wins, Audi has major electrical problems (from my relatives who own Audi's) and parts & maintenance is twice as of similarly equipped Infiniti's. I have owned Infiniti's from I30T to G37 Sports Convertible so I know the Infiniti's inside out which makes it a bit easier all the way around.

Hi, I also had been contemplating a 2014 S4. I have researched this car in depth for a year. Hours and hours to be honest. Mostly around the magnetic steering issues. Here is a letter I finally wrote to the dealer/GM where I was going to make the purchase. You need to look closely at the various forums to be safe. I have since bought a Q50 which has arrived at the dealer. Have driven a couple of them and they are gorgeous. I preordered or Chestnut Bronze S fully loaded. The only thing I don't have is the Hybrid model. Have also owned 3 Infinitis previously and have built, over the years, a great relationship with the local dealer. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Hi,

As you know, over the past many months, I have been thoroughly impressed with the Audi product and excited to become part of the Audi family. Because the Audi brand is totally new to me, and because I am a researcher of everything I do and purchase, I have daily put considerable effort into finding out as much as I can about the product, particularly the S4.

Unfortunately, I am apprehensive of the issues that seem to be surfacing around the magnetic steering that has been employed on the S4. I know it is not new technology for Audi as it has been in the 3 series since 2006. I have also spoken in depth with **** and **** about the potential issues with this system. Both people have assured me that it has not been a huge problem up to this juncture. I know that you do not give a lot of credence to car forums or bloggers (i.e., Audizine, Audi World etc.) however with me where there is 'smoke there could be fire'. The issues that seem to be coming to the fore have mainly been around the steering. The individuals that are sharing their stories are not potential Audi customers but the majority of them have been Audi followers for years. One person reporting has had 6 Audis in 12 years. Many report that they presently own more than just one Audi. But for them to continue to revisit this unfortunate situation, quotes such as: (grinding noises, notchiness, unstable, hazard to drive, vibration, wandering, shimmy, drifting, rough feel, vagueness etc.) and myriad more descriptive words about the steering issues such as 'tramlining', makes me have grave doubts about being satisfied with these potential problems. A number of people have even spoken about disabling the 'Driver Steering' through the VAG-COM. I have to admit I have been zeroing in mainly on the A/S series vehicle as that is the car that I am most interested in purchasing. Many of these same individuals who have thousands of dollars invested in their vehicles are saying that they don't want to travel long distances because of the steering feel on crowned roads, rough pavement or a highway with imperfections, is definitely a concern of mine. Numerous times they speak to changing from the factory tires, or driving all year with snow tires, changing back to 17" wheels, not using the Dynamic mode in Drive Select etc., etc. which speaks to fact that there is something unusual present with this steering system. Some have stated that their dealer has performed the Power Steering Control Unit Criteria 44 test with still no improvement. I have also read that Audi of America is aware of these issues and is working to correct the problem but as yet there is no solution and people just have been told to live with it.
I have to be admit, that when I drove the S4 I did not experience these issues as I only drove locally and for a very short distance as it was a new car and you wanted to keep the mileage low.

With all the research that I continue to do, I remain apprehensive about committing to a vehicle, that in the end, may present issues that cannot be rectified or resolved by Audi to my satisfaction. "That is just the way they drive, handle or are" remains a very unsatisfactory answer to me being the kind of person I am. I sincerely hope that the next generation of S4 that will arrive in the not too distance future, will be a vehicle that I can seriously consider as I have never seen a vehicle that is so dedicated to fit and finish which I so much appreciate.

At this time I do not believe that I can comfortably commit to the purchase of a 2014 Audi S4 with the present knowledge that I have with this vehicle.

I want to sincerely thank you for our many chats and also the opportunity you gave me to familiarize myself with the Audi brand. It has been very much appreciated!

Nice feedback. I, too, started off with the Audi high on my list, but I was unaware of the steering issues. I had mostly heard of complaints of this sort aimed at BMW.

I have to admit that I was surprised that you took the plunge with the Q50, seeing that the drive-by-wire steering on this model has been one of the biggest concerns of people considering it. What convinced you that the Q50 was OK when the Audi was not?
