Short throw shifters?

Coming from a 2006 m35x, the only thing I absolutely HATE about my Q50 premium is the tall shifter. I've been trying to find some DIY stuff on it, but all I get is information on the g37x.

So the easiest question to pose is:

Is the shift mechanism/knob the same as the 2013 g37x? If not, is there a third party short throw on the market yet?

Thank you for bringing this up. I had a q70 loaner the other day and I like that shifter so much more than ours. I would be very curious Ina solution

Wow, they gave you a Q70 as a loaner? I need to ask for a Q70 loaner the next time I go in. :)

I test drove a M37 a while back and the short throw shifter definitely is an inspired touch---it's not very common to see and it feels very upscale and archaic in a good way.

Every dealer have different loaners. Here in OR, they only have Q50 and QX60. My go to dealer in CA, they have a full line, except for FX/QX70.

My wife's QX60 also has the same shifter as the M37 and Q70 and I wish it could be fitted on the q50.

I had the M37 shift knob on my G sedan. I had to make a notch in the metal for the shift knob to clip too but otherwise it went right on. I would think the Q should be similar.

Is this what you're talking about?

Here is a DIY for installing a 2008 M45S Shift Knob

This DIY was done by a friend of mine (GarnetCanuck) on his G35 Sedan. It is pretty straight forward.

1. Pull down on shift boot

2. Remove clip from shift knob

3. Pull shift knob up to remove.

4.Shift knob removed

5. Slide on M45 shift knob and mark the location of the grooves. You can use a hack saw blade or something simple like a serrated steak knife to make the grooves, since it is just plastic.

6. Install shift knob then the clip.

7. Pull up the boot

8. The completed install.

I believe the shifter in the new Q70 is the same as the M37 M56 with touring package

The stitch pattern on the knob matches our interior perfectly. I had the M37 cross stitch pattern on my G, will get this and try to install the same way.

So I followed the directions in the thread on installing the prestigious society mod to access the shift boot. I installed the collar I received from the M37 and here are the results

The original collar was a b*tch to remove. I used a tie cable to hold the new collar in place.

Looks good. How long did it take you?

Anyone else going to try to get the shift knob from the new Q60 and QX60? If the price isn't outrageous I may have to go looking for it. Not sure how short it is though but I like the detailing with the logo on top instead of the silver design we have now.

so.. I checked out the price on the M37 Touring Pkg Shift Knob... (it has the WHITE stitching to match the Q50 interior detail), it's $163.00!?!? OMG!!

that's a lot of scratch for a shift knob.. OEM at THAT!?

guess if you REALLY want it... :|

The M37/M57 chrome boot collar that the knob snaps into does NOT come as a separate line item.. you HAVE to get the complete "Shift Indicator".. which is the boot and panel it mounts to that shows what position the tranny is in.... that's ANOTHER $165.00!!

When it's all said and done with tax/shipping, you're dropping like almost $400 for this totally cosmetic mod... D@MN!!

Sorry to change the OP's original thread subject, but does anyone know if this shift knob fits our Q50s?
2016 Nissan Maxima 4DSC White Stitching Brushed Satin Shift Knob Genuine New | eBay
Ah, the good ol Maxima 4 Door Sports Car. Too bad Nissan wrecked this car with its horrendous CVT. To answer your question, I think it should fit much like any shift knob. I also thought about this one myself but figure the Q70 knob was the way to go. 4DSC will always be known as the Maxima in my opinion and I wouldn't want to slap that on my Q. If you do decide to go that direction, let me know how it goes and post some pics as well please.

My wife's QX50 has the same ring collar as the M37/56 for the shift boot. It's a very simple setup... you have the thin chrome ring/collar at the top of the boot, then a retaining groove on the inside that the boot is secured to with a simple ring clip, like a single wind of a spring,, that's IT!

The total height of this Chrome Collar Ring is 1/2 - 3/4" at the most.

So, to install on the Q50:

With the console removed and the boot inverted, so you're looking at the inside(stitched side) of the boot, completely remove the huge black two piece collar clip inside the boot.

Slip the chrome collar upside down from the inside of the boot, leaving 1/2 to 3/4' of the boot to allow enough slack for the spring clip to get a good grip on the boot.

Open the spring clip enough to clear the collar and boot and clip it to the retaining groove of the chrome collar piece.
Make sure the boot material is worked into the groove as much as possible to insure a secure fit with the spring ring clip and the collar retaining groove.

When you invert the boot back into position, the boot should be snuggly clipped into the collar groove with only the chrome collar ring showing!

So here's what the finished install looks like:

Before:

After:

Here's the part numbers for this:

349101MA1A 2012 M37 X Shift knob

34126EG000 (34126-EG000) Pin-Lock (Spring Clip Ring)

34929EG000 (34929-EG000) Cover-Control Lever (Chrome Collar Ring)

The shift knob on her QX50 is very similar to the Q50.. but not exactly the same... it has the chrome collar that the knob would clip to the boot, so I could just get the M37 knob, regroove the shifter shaft for the retaining clip and snap the collar to the knob, similar to installing on a G37!

No console removal required!!

She would LIKE that!!

Her interior doesn't have the white stitching so she could use the M37 NON-TOURING shift knob.. it's all black, no white stiching... the TOURING version has the white stitching... which is what I ordered for my Q50.

(possible MOTHER'S DAY present!!) :D

Looks very nice! Appreciate the tutorial. Seems like all the parts can be had for under $180 so not nearly as bad as the $400 I originally thought it would be. Just curious - How much shorter would you say the new knob sits vs. the original? Hard to tell from the pics.

Thanks.. I like the look... and the feel of the leather shift knob.

I'd say it's less than an inch in difference, but it's also different in shape, as well as feel to it... it's not as "pointy" looking as the original... has a more traditional 'stub" look/feel to it! :)

It DEFINITELY complements the overall look of the console with the stitching on it

I'll take a pic with the console all put back together to give you a better overall perspective.
