Hello Everyone

I just happened to pop the hood this evening and I noticed this splatter of coolant everywhere.

In the second picture below was how low the coolant expansion tank was before I started the car.

I added water until it got in between the max and min line on the expansion tank.

I let the car reach normal operating temperate and I noticed that the coolant expansion tank begin to rise

While letting the car idle, I did not see any coolant leaking at that general area in the first picture.

So I am thinking that it's not a leaky hose.. but I'm just curious why the coolant expansion tank was below MIN.

Do you normally add just water to make up for a low coolant level?

For diagnosing purpose yes I believe it's okay.

Normally for cars, you will either buy a 50/50 mix of antifreeze or you can buy antifreeze in full strength and dilute it 50/50.

I am leaning towards the radiator caps being the culprit

I will be cleaning that area with some all-purpose cleaning and a boar hair brush and seeing if the coolant overflows again.

The radiator cap would be the first place to start. Hopefully it's that and not an issue with the thermostat or multi-way control valve.

Just an update, I dropped my car off at the dealership and 45 minutes later they told me that my radiator caps were on reverse.

The funny thing is that the last person to touch my car was the Infiniti dealership when I got my AC compressor replaced.

Anyway for future reference, the coolant overflow tank is the one with the spring built into the cap. (Look for kPa on the cap)

It looks like one has a pressure release and one does not. Big difference.

Good help is hard to find.

So why is it in the original picture that the two caps are in the same position as they are in the last picture?

It could be that the caps look very similar but the main difference between them is the sealing mechanism.

Also, I forgot to add that I purchased a new radiator cap from Infiniti and the logo design looks slightly different than the old one.

In the picture below the one that is installed is the new radiator cap vs the right is the old one that came with the car.

There was enough dried coolant to obscure the pressure rating so It kind of looked like they were proper locations in the first picture.
