Here is the delta gain with AMS intakes and a tune. 15HP peak gain.

 

Very hard to see the value in terms of real-world WHP/WTQ gains. The same money spent on LDP would yield you more in my experience.

 

I have the same intake as emzplax, I shorted it a little to be in the bumper, and switched the filters to k&n it works great!

very tight engine bay hard to reach clamps .
had to take out the passenger headlight.

I honestly heard no difference between OEM and my AMS intakes. (I love that sound in my Cummins turbo diesel.) I would not compromise performance for sound. Noise does not make power. I also did not "feel" any difference. I'm sure the few HP are there, but who can feel 3-10 hp in a 400+ wheel HP car? My mods are cumulative.

I'm finally at the point where I'm ready to dyno my car.

 

I would never take an air filter off. The insignificant gain vs. possible engine damage is simply not worth it.

 

Has anyone tested no filters? In my supercharged Maxima, on dyno or track days, I would take the filter off. Never did an A-B test, it was just for theoretical gains.

 

No... Also wouldn't recommend anyone do that the potential risks to the engine aren't worth it, the intake and air filters in modern cars are very well optimized you are talking maybe 3HP best case for dropping a filter.

 

Yes i have great advice for you, DON'T buy intakes. Waste of your cash, and you will only end up with dirtier charge pipes allowing more dirt and oil to make its way into "OUR" Direct Injection intake valves. Making GREAT power on my stock OEM intakes, put your cash into another MOD that will provide you real results.

 

It's hard to beat the AMS intakes, especially the fact it's a Nissan Motorsports Catalog item and you will never hear a word about warranty issues. There are also no driveability issues whether tuned or not.

The BMS silicone inlets and aFe drop-ins would be another good option.

I had some of the ones mentioned above and settled on AMS. Thankfully, the other guys had no problems with refunds. I have had zero drivability issues with the AMS intakes and I have had those for over a year.

Not so OEM and AMS are a true CAI. These say "No Returns" also expensive. In the drawing I see no way water would not be an issue. It may have something to keep it out of your motor, but will quickly impair the volume of air that can pass through the layers of the filter after getting soaked.
Also, when you wash your car the water will instantly soak the foam. They are also blocking air flow from your radiators.
*I* would not recommend this product to any Q50/60 owner.

Have you seen the amount of media in the AMS intake cone? No mention from AMS at the % over stock air flow but I'd bet it matches, and in the rain, or after washing your car, they will flow a lot better.

BUT with an EcuTek tune you gain all the way through the RPM rang with, 17hp peak gain. Good usable HP and torque from 4250 RPM-5250 RPM, again with a tune, where we start to fall off due to our small turbos. Dyno: RPM. If you absolutely have to do cold air intakes, spend the $ on the AMS Intakes only after you've done ever other mod and you absolutely need the 10-15 hp (maybe) with a tune.

 

OEM is the way to go for sure. If tuned the AMS gets my vote. In a tuned car it gets slightly better #'s, and at 5k a few ponies more. It LOOKS cool. Lol. Yes I have them.
Did I feel a difference? About as much as a window decal. On a dyno it will show a slight improvement.

Mods are cumulative if planned correctly IMHO. Mine all work together, and provide for upward flexibility.

 

Boy the stock intake (even the filters) really flow well from the data I'm seeing. Our filters are actually larger in dimension than what Nissan puts in the GT-R. The paper media in the OEM filter also kinda looks like the Nismo high flow paper filters.

AFE has data on their site that a stock filter flows 355 CFM @ 1.5" H2O. And we have 2. There is no restriction there whatsoever. Incidentally K&N's flow data on their drop-in for this car is also 355 CFM lol.

AFE claims 7% better flow than OEM for their drop in dry filters. I went with these for the fact that I can clean and reuse. My OEM ones were quite dirty after 9500 miles. The drop ins will save me some $. I'm don't feel or expect any type of performance increase.

 

Personally ill be using stock box with bms tubing just to smooth out flow, slightly compared to stock.
