So what exactly is it that causes this to be a $3000+ repair at an Infiniti dealer?
Ignorance and folks that wouldn’t attempt the fix themselves.

It's pretty straightforward. Some finishers and the Integral Switch have to come off to access the DCU. You just have to be careful not to break any pawls getting them off. After that, it's just a screwdriver show to remove the DCU.

There are separate part numbers for DCUs with nav and without nav, FWIW. I'm only going by what the service manual says.
I called a local dealer & they gave me the exact part number(s) for my VIN, they very helpful, actually.

They said they'll install a part that I source for ~$400, but it wouldn't have a warranty.

So does that mean they charge $3k for the same part, only new?

Infinitiusa parts lists the DCU w/o nav (28387-4HB7E) at $3,439.91. Discount Infiniti Parts lists it at $2,648.73. Ridiculous.

Good advice however it’s much easier than that.
Nav or not is all you need to know when purchasing a replacement DCU.
Yes true, but upon my research theres about 5-6 version of the DCU and some them are based on manufacture date.

Do that, its still better than nothing. I think there also referring to that the part installed wont have warranty not the entire car itself.

Also would they reprogram that DCU configurations to match your vehicle in that price?

A few Attorneys General should be made aware of this and take legal action. Or at least there has to be a way to embarrass Infiniti over this. I would also be curious as to what other manufacturers charge for a similar part. The problem is not too many people have sympathy for others that can afford a $60k car.

It was the impression that I got, that they would full program everything for that price. I ordered one from ebay. Fingers Crossed.
If you bought the correct DCU, (Nav or no Nav) there is nothing to program. Don’t let your dealer take your money. A Phillips head screwdriver is all you need to replace the DCU. I have Smartauto kits video link that shows you how do DIY and am happy to share it with you.

The "screens" that are proliferating into vehicles these days are all ridiculously expensive. Not just Infiniti. I wouldn't be surprised if we see the costs increase even more over the next 1-2 years due to the chip shortages.

Yes, I'd love to see that. I bought the right part, and I'll update the thread as I approach a resolution.

With the amount of work (probably) involved, and how cheap the eBay ones are, I would get a couple of them to make sure at least one works and you don't have to put things together and tear them apart again.

The compatible ones for my car are
28387-4HB7A
28387-4HB7B
28387-4HB7D
28387-4HB7E
28387-4HB7E supersedes the older part numbers you listed but I would think if you could find any of those used, they should work.

Jumping in because my 2015 Premium/Nav just went dark a few days ago. Not able to reset and dealer says it needs new DCU. I’m looking for a used part and will attempt installation myself, or dealer will do it for $250. So far I have not been able to locate a used part with the same part number suffix as my dealer quoted - HB6E - and I’m wondering about interchangeability. Any info on that and/or tips on self installation would be greatly appreciated. Recommendations for eBay or other online sellers also welcome.

KenHuber - good luck, looking forward to your next update.
