This is an interesting thread.

When told it's not legal, the response is it is legal because I've never been pulled over for it. That doesn't make it legal, it just means you haven't been held accountable for it yet.

When told that the environmental integrity may be compromised, the response is that OP just removes them when it rains. What?

If you still have the original red lenses, you could get some thin lexan (plexiglass), heat it up and clamp it to the original lenses. They’ll take the curve of the OEM lenses. Then use some clear sealer and boom, no need to remove them when the weather dumps out.
It's very difficult to get a good looking lens this way given the compound curves on these tails. It's doable on simpler tails, but to get some that look decent from closer than 20' you really want to create a mold and cast new ones. Running no lens at all is probably the best, most cost effective method for Instagram though.

Gotta do it for the Gram!

After finding out the lenses were removed and pulls them out when it rains, I change my statement to ghetto af LOL

At this point, I'd rather just do a tailight delete mod than clear lenses

I agree. Just straight up stupid. Which is probably why he never tells anyone how he did this. He knows that he'll get laughed at.

I'm not even sure how what category this goes in. Classsy rice? It looks kinda cool but still rice. And because its on a black car, it just stands out more rice. Might look a passable eh on a red car. But still clear tails belong on 1998 Honda Civics but cool unique mod for being the first so kudos to you. Clean looking car otherwise, esp with the Z wheels.
I think it looks cool but it becomes rice without any lenses. Slightly smoked clear lens would look very clean. But I agree this execution is a very.. interesting way of doing things, especially with exposed LEDs.

Additionally, he is not the first to do this.

people have no taste, no one makes clear lenses for these cars yet. If there were lenses would have put them on. People are just old heads and find it too complicated.

they would not be classified illegal because they still have red brake lights when braking..... The integrity of the lights when it rains is compromised as we 2018+ have LED chips instead of bulbs therefore when it rains i do it for the sake of not damaging the chip.... The lights have their normal colors when doing traditional things such as turning (orange) braking (red).

Would this work? saw it on amazon doesnt look to expensive.

I'd not be making the claim it is legal as something like this can very pretty heavily depending on the wording of the driving laws for each state....

Broadly speaking though an officer could pretty easily argue your taillights are damaged and consider them dangerous as the lack of the covers can impact the effectiveness of the tail lights themselves. Those covers are there to protect the bulbs from the elements and road debris, so even if you don't get a ticket for having the covers removed themselves the likely hood you loose one of the tail lights is pretty high.

Something like this is just asking for a ticket.

also loosing a tail light would not be possible as they are held on by bolts and the red cover would not cause anything from flying away…… it’s just a red piece of plastic

It should work. My brother made custom LED taillights for his old MX6 years ago and used this technique for the lenses.

Nothing about what you did is complicated. People are just shocked because it wouldn't occur to most to just hack up their tail lights and leave the elements exposed just to get a certain look. You did a silly, jimmy-rig hatchet job to your lights that anyone can see is ghetto if they get within 20' of your car. People called you out on it and now you're all butt-hurt because not everyone's swinging on your nuts.

Get over it dude. Not everyone likes the same thing. Personally I don't like the clear lens look. Which is why I said I liked your wheels in my initial post. "If you can't say something nice...." and all that.
