Easily the worst headlight design in 50 years, regardless of model. This is the face of the car, and they gave it tiny, squinty eyes with some glitter eyeliner.

This is much more coherent, simple, and elegant.

Oh that is..

BOOOOOOOR-RIIIIIIIIIIING!

God, afrosheen, you've got to leave the past in the past! It's a new day and we can't possibly go on with the same ol' designs from before! It's time to take risks and get nuts. That's how we take things to a new level, man. Go broke or go home!:cool:

Maybe you're missing the larger picture?

The new Lexus IS ain't about being simple and elegant anymore. It's about aggressiveness and crazy style!

It's rand new day, afro!

There is a difference between new and improved, versus new for the sake of being different. These headlights are retarded.
"retarded"? Really?

Wow, is that really where you've decided to resort to?

I'm fine with expressing an opinion, but using that word always seemed like a lazy cop-out answer to me. :(

I'll admit the Last Gen IS is a pretty timeless design. Still looks good. And I am warming up to the new IS, but still prefer the looks of the Q50 more. Its a much more mature and sporty design.

Okay, let me expand then.

Lexus did not come with a new design because it was an improvement over the previous one. They came up with a design because their thought process is "Hey guys, Audi is really doing well with these LED headlight things. What can we do? Let's separate them from the main headlight cluster and beat the consumer over the head with a "Captain Obvious" hammer to make sure they know we have LED headlights too!!!"

When it comes to design, Toyota/Lexus does not have an ounce of originality in their DNA. When they first debuted, they copied Mercedes. The LS has always copied the S-class. Remember the just-discontinued SC 430? Yeah, an Audi TT mated with the first gen Mercedes SLK and the result was the abomination christened SC430. Now all car maker are copying the Europeans in having a common set of design traits that they want exhibit across their whole product line up. Mercedes, BMW, and relatively recently Audi and to some extent Jaguar have been doing this for a while now.

Why did they do that? Because when these car brands were first born, you needed huge radiator grills for cooling, and car design overall had not matured like it has today. So they chose the radiator grill as the canvas on which to work on in oder to differentiate themselves from other brands. Because initially the doors, head lights, tires, wheels, were all pretty much same across car makers. Over time, as things evolved and manufacturing got better and capability to form complex shapes in metal stampings got better, car makers started incorporating more unique designs. The BMW Hoffmeister Kick, for example. European designs today is a result of literally decades of design evolution.

Lexus decided they want to get in on the act. WHich is fine if that is what you want to do because the public demands it and you have to supply what the public demands. But you know what Lexus did? The decided to pick a front radiator grill that looks like a mold of the freaking Predator and decided to call it a day. Look at the rest of the LS - a flat slabbed design copied from the previous gen Mercedes S class. In fact, when the current LS debuted, it was boring, but at least cohesive. But in the mid-cycle refresh, Lexus corporate acquired this obsession that they want a corporate look like the German competitors. So tacked on the predator grill and called it a day. Look at the current Lexus LS being sold. Or the RS SUV. The **** grill looks like some after market accessory. They did practically nothing to the rest of the **** cars, except add more LEDs to the tail lights because they are all the rage. There is no way you can look at the LS or RX and tell me they represent a singular vision of what the car designers wants it to look like

Problem with Lexus is not that they copy, which they do. Problem is that they then take the basic theme they copied and tweak it just enough so it is not so obvious to the casual observer that it is a knock off. Unfortunately when they tweak, they don't tweak to improve or put any real thought why the original designer did what they did for that design. They take on design idea from here, another design idea from there and try to mash it all together. It's almost like they are throw $hit on the wall to see what sticks.

The result looks retarded! That IS headlight design is bad, and reflects no thought process behind it. This is my opinion, and you can disagree.

If you like the look, more power to you. I am not going to judge you or anyone for liking one design over another. Lexus, Audi, BMW, or whatever else. I am not saying anyone who buys a Lexus or BMW or whatever is one kind of person or another.

I am saying in my opinion the Lexus IS headlight cluster design is retarded.

I think the use of the word, "retarded" is what is in question. You're using in a derogatory and offensive way. Calling someone or something retarded in an insulting fashion is no longer acceptable to many as mental retardation, autism and Down syndrome have become more common. I know that I personally find it offensive as much as I find other derogatory words.

Of course he may have simply meant Lexus isn't and not found it inappropriate but some of us do.

I think the IS is very original, unfortunately that's not a good thing. I really think the front end is really ugly. It really seems like they wanted all out shock value. I guess there are a lot of 22 year old guys with a lot more money than I had when I was that age.

Haha!!! That's exactly what I thought when we did the age poll on here and half where in their 20's!! Of course at that age I made a LOT less money but was young and didn't need sleep or a life so I worked all kinds of crazy overtime.

You can say the same thing about the other way around! ;)

Older people (not just here, but in my own social experience) tend to become extremely resistant to things that are unique and bring originality and are different from what they're used to. Especially when it comes to subjective art or music. I've noticed that can get downright nitpicky and incredibly pessimistic sometimes about certain things and really blow things out of proportion really (i.e., calling it "shock value"? It's not that big of a deal, IMO).

When it comes to car designs, there's an obvious division in the preferences department when it comes to age of the buyer and I can only speculate why this is. Conversely, when a car doesn't go far enough in originality or doesn't try to infuse any kind of personality in its design, people jump on that saying that it looks like everything else and it's just stealing ideas from other companies.

I suppose for me, it's very hard to read some of the opinions I've been reading and how extreme some of them come off sounding as I'm reading them. I see people talking badly about this car as if it's some kind of an abomination and I just do not see itthat way.

Simpson, of course you're right about older people sometimes(O.K., many times) being resistant to change. That's why advertisement traditionally has been aimed at younger people. However, sometimes things ARE ugly to the vast majority, and not just because they're new(Most obvious example is the Pontiac Aztec - dam+n, it's still hard to look at that thing). Generally, as people age(i.e., mature) they usually come to see that you don't have to be outlandish to be attractive. So, if someone likes outlandish, that's their choice, and I wouldn't quibble with them. However, if something in my eyes is ugly, I'll call it that. Check back in 20 years, and see if the front of the Lexus is still attractive to you - I'd bet it isn't. And by the way, I also thing the dash of the IS is without any cohesiveness, like it was designed by four people who each wanted THEIR ideas in the car, and they all got their way. Of course, that's just my opinion.;)

Now that it's been a few days, a few things have started to sink in about this car.

Some of you will be happy to know that I knocked down my original score of 8.2/10 to 8.1/10.. :p

What caused the reduction?

How do you do that? Never mind, I don't want to know. :p

Sorry, I couldn't resist taking a jab at our resident spellchecker. :)
Guilty. I will plead extaordinary circumstances. I am still on vacation, using a strange computer, and I had just woken up. However, I should have re-read my post, so I accept the sentence.

Yesterday I checked out an IS350 F Sport and a GS350 (non F sport). I am 6'2" and have a large frame. I could put the seat further back in the IS350 than any other car I have been in. Further back than I could comfortably drive. Backseat was unusable at this point. Unfortunately, I found the side bolsters way too tight to be comfortable. Also, the interior is a solid step below the Q50 in quality of materials. Lots of hard plasticky pieces that screamed "I will be scratched to **** in 6 months". Absolutely loved the LFA inspired TFT Dash. So cool. Based on seats, space, and interior components, I didn't even drive. Too bad as Ive heard its a blast to drive. So, onto the GS350.

The GS350 is a nice car, but uninspiring to me. The exterior styling is boring. Nice quality interior - step up in material quality from the Q50, but not by a lot. I didn't like the ride. Felt big - like my 2006 M. Unfortunately, they did not have an F sport for me to try. Also, it is apparently rare for GS350 to have the adaptive cruise feature, which for me is now a must.

Certainly not reviews, but a few impressions. Still planning on the Q50, but anxiously awaiting an E350 with Driver Assistance Package to come in so I can drive.

Having shopped both as well, to me, the Q50 is the more comfortable car to drive. The IS seats are way too tight in the shoulders as you stated and I totally agree. Not to mention the drivers "cockpit" is narrow. It's smooth and quick but the Q50 was just a quick and smooth.

The GS interior is...ok and agree with your comments. The F Sport GS does make a difference however not the large car feeling.
