I just want my car to keep the same new car smell that it had when I purchased it. :|

Interesting. I think the car has a smell that is very close to a new car smell, but when my wife got in for the first time she said it was a unique smell that is different from any new car she can remember (we've had quite a few). Regardless, I don't find it offensive at all. My car was manufactured last December.

But I love the smell of my S seats.

Upon reading that, my first thought was, "Before or after sitting on them?">:D

As far as my car is concerned, I haven't noticed any odd smells. And from what people are saying here, I really don't want to know what they are smelling.;)

Its funny we are discussing this, because manufacturers have actually been trying a way to PREVENT the "new car smell" . Supposedly theyd rather not have the "fumes" of the new plastics and leather and vinyl on vehicles.

Wow. I could've written the exact thing as ADG. EXACT same experience. At 7500 miles, smells like leather to me, wife says it smells like manure. It only happens briefly at random times, then POOF! smell is gone in less than 5 seconds. I have manually turned all vents off (incl the one to the rear seats) AND set the climate control to OFF. Still get "that funny odor". I cannot find the source, not matter how hard I try since it is gone in a flash. Thanks to all for posting on such a weird topic - but I've experienced it. One more weird observation - happens more often after a turn (exit ramp, etc).

I want to try this - I've read reviews on the volcanic dust when the package arrives. How did you avoid dusting up your car?
Shake it out a bit when you get it. You can get a little dust out of it, but I haven't found it to be bad. It just sits there under the driver's seat so if you don't shake it around, dust doesn't fly around.

As for the person who said dealer put regular gas in and caused smell - that's not possible. First, regular gas wouldn't cause that. Second, I don't know about other dealerships, but we put high test in new cars. Third, that smell is common to all new cars. It is just burning off the coatings on the various metal pieces that get hot in the car - plus probably some catalyst from the catalytic converter.

I believe u get a different smell after doing that but the result will be a "happy ending"!

Hahahaha!

I just found you guys by googling Q50 smell! I have the exact same problem. Leased my Q50 (base with moonroof) off the lot after sitting in a showroom car that also had the leatherette. Showroom car had no odor but the one I test drove smelled bad. The salesman told me he didn't smell anything and no one has ever mentioned it to him before. After reading this, I find that really difficult to believe although I do think he is straight shooter. I even asked to see another one just to see if it, too, smelled and it did. I took it with the hope that it eventually off gasses enough to not smell, hopefully the way it did with the showroom car. Strangely, my wife doesn't seem to notice it but that's a whole other conversation.

U guys scared the crap out of me... After reading this thread a couple of weeks ago, I've been so paranoid in my car trying to see if I can find that smell.

Mind you I have a Q50S Hybrid, so maybe it is the leatherette versus the real leather. But I was smelling the head liner, sunroof area, seats, headrest, everywhere. I felt like a coke head but instead of coke I was snorting leather dust LOL.

But yea, maybe it's the base version that has the funk? So weird, please post any findings you guys come across, best of luck!

My wife, in a former life, was a bloodhound. If there was a smell, she would have found it. Ours has leather.

I think I narrowed it down to my trunk. I took out the spare and the liner so I just have the crappy cushions in there right now. I do notice it when it's hot out. Seems to only last a bit - or I just get used to it and it doesn't bother me for long but it is not a pleasant odor.

Edit: and I have the leather seats

No doubt, the trunk stinks more than the car and it is possible that the smell is coming from the trunk but, as I said before, the showroom car was stink-free. I really find it annoying, especially after coming from leather. I'll give it time and see but I also admit that I am more sensitive to some smells than others. If it doesn't go away, though, I'm going to have a problem with my dealer. They acted as though it was just me and, clearly, it's not.
