SD card for navigation system

Hi guys,

I just bought a 2014 Q50 today and the dealer told me that the reason why the navigation system wasn't working is because I need a SD card to put in it. He said I could buy one from Best Buy and download the map on it ? I'm not very sure how that work as I'm not familiar with these kind of things. Alternately, if it's too complicated I would just buy one from Infiniti but I'm not sure what to buy exactly..

If anyone can help, that would be appreciated !!

Thanks.

The dealer's explanation sounds a little fishy to me... where was the SD card? why was it removed? did you buy from an Infiniti dealer?
Navigation maps can be found here: Infiniti Navigation Map Updates | Home | HERE
I can't be sure about whether or not an update can be downloaded and installed on a SD card, I seem to recall reading something somewhere maybe in the manual about proprietary information having to be present on the card.

Did this "dealer" advertise the car as having Navigation? If so, I'd demand that they give you a car with navigation. The one you have clearly doesn't have it.

You're going to have to pay for the SD card. But not a generic one. One with the data on it. And the correct code to make it work in your car. This "dealer" should take care of this for you. This is bullshit. I hate scumbags that give the rest of us a bad name.

Also, double check that the card isn't in there and just not seated properly.

I thank you for being on this forum. A lot of people get mislead often by dealerships. I'm glad there are still honest folks like you that work in them.

Yeah when I saw the price of these thing ( I was expecting around 20-25$ haha ) I decided to call the dealership back and asked to speak to the director. He said he would get one from another car and put it in mine.. From what I understand this won't work but he guaranteed that it would be working when I go get the car next weekend so it's not my problem anymore haha.

Thanks for the answers guys, it's really appreciated.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul. I worked at a dealership once that did that all of the time. It catches up with you. And a tremendous hassle for the sales people. You never know what is missing on the car you are trying to sell.

The problem here is that in this case it will not work! It must be keyed to the particular vehicle based on the nav system serial number. I hope this does indeed have a good resolution for you in the end but be prepared to go through more hassle.

This is very confusing. So does the OP need to buy a special SD card with the maps on it? Or can he/she buy any SD card from Amazon and then a "map update" and download that to the card?

If there is no card in the car, what needs to be purchased?

If there is no card in the car, you'd need to purchase one if you want to use the navigation. Just keep in mind the SD card will be locked with your NAV ID, that's why when you place an order from Infiniti Navigation Map Updates | HERE you'd need to supply your NAV ID. Then along with the SD card, they'll include the activation code which, goes without saying, would only work with your nav.

IIRC you buy the SD card WITH the SW (maps) on it.. you need the "code" to unlock it so to speak, it install/recognize it.

If the SD card was originally registered to your car and that's what the used car dealer is sending you then it should work. If not, I'd be pressing that dealership to pay for one that does work before buying one myself. They're $129 at Here. You send them your NAVI ID with the money and they send you a SD card registered to your car.

I have a 2014 q50 without navigation. I found a used 2016 nav screen along with a SD card port that I install. Only thing I’m missing is the SD card to complete the installation. I also called Infiniti dealer and they gave me a part number for the sd card for the nav screen. Do you knows if it’ll work since I didn’t give my vin # to get a part #?

My issue is that my car doesn’t come with the nav feature so if I give them my vin number I don’t think they would be able to find a sd for my vin. That’s where my concern is. I’ve got the sd card part number from the Infiniti dealer for the 2016 screen but I did not provide a vin for them to give me the part number

Just buying a 2016 DCU with navigation and an SD map card won't get you navigation. You'll also need an external data input box with an SD card slot, a NAVI control unit, GPS antenna, LVDS cables, and appropriate wiring harnesses for all of that.
