I just picked up my new Q50 without the leather package and the interior has a weird smell, not the typical "New Car Smell". Has anyone had this problem? I'm sorry that I don't have the leather seats, or several other features that I had in my G37. Thx.

I believe he's referring to the vinyl seats! Which I have to agree, do STINK (literally).... smells like BO and onions!!! :(

Next car will definitely have GENUINE LEATHER!! Another mistake I made with the options I (didn't) picked!

**** Infiniti, leather should be standard!! I know I know MB and BMW have options too, but we're already shelling out 40k+, who would complain about a starting price of 43-44k just to have that standard?? Why would a person RATHER have vinyl!?!!?

I'm curious how u know the distinct smell of the combination of BO and Onions! :p:p:p

Try getting Zaino Z10 it smells nice and wipe that onto your seats! ;)

You can thank BMW for pleather seats. Leave the car in the sun with windows open for a few hours a couple of days in a row and the smell should improve.

I keep one of these things under the seat in my car. It recharges by leaving it in the sun once every few months. Seems to work pretty well.

I want to try this - I've read reviews on the volcanic dust when the package arrives. How did you avoid dusting up your car?

It's not the Vinyl seats it's the interior roof. I have real leather in mine and noticed that weird smell too. It is a BO & Onions smell. It's the worst when it's hot outside. It's the material on the interior ceiling. It took me about a month to locate it. I can't get rid of it.

I had a super strong 'new car' smell when I got my Q50, although I have leather. I heard that when they prep the car for pickup they're supposed to run a process called "baking out”. Apparently it's a combination of heat and ventilation. This is supposed to help but in my case - I rushed them to pick up the car the same day as I signed and I think that's the reason. It was strong! The next morning it was really nice out and I left the windows open for a couple hours... helped a bit. Unless ya dropped a sausage and peppers sandwich in the back? ;)

Funny the comment about the headliner. That could be true. I got in a new leather car the other day and noticed a smell.

As for "baking out," I'm not really sure what that is. We sometimes run the car with the heat all the way up on a used car after we've used the machine that kills off smoke smell. But I've never heard of "baking out" a new car.

Now "hot boxing" a car...I've heard of that.

;)

If the smell really is coming from the headliner, I'd try spraying some Febreeze on it and leaving the car out in the sun.

Lol yea I've noticed this when I get in the loaner cars w/ that leatherette. Smells like regret. But I love the smell of my S seats. :p

My Q50S Hybrid is at the dealership right now because of that horrid onion smell. They are trying an odor neutralizing treatment. I'm glad I someone else posted on this because people thought I was crazy. I also think they put 87 octane in the car before I bought it so I get a lot of combustion smell in the cabin. I love the car but it smells toxic!!

WTF?!?! I'm reading this and laughing but actually noticed this myself. I opened my trunk the other day and thought 'wow, I gotta see what half eaten food I inadvertently left back there'.

I can't believe others are noticing the same thing.

So on the headliner idea (not sure why the smell would be stronger in the trunk if it's he headliner but who knows??) is it the surface of the headliner or something embedded in the material or even something above the headliner?

WTH??? Now I'm wondering if we should look at our production dates. Maybe the same dude on the assembly line was eating a sausage sammich and kept dropping the contents into our cars :D

Well, I'm sure some people may actually be thinking this thread is a bit of a joke but I can definitely say I notice the smell in my car. (Although the opportunity for jokes may be too much for most of us to pass up :) )

If anyone figures out the exact cause and a solution please let us know!

And to the OP - good on ya man. It takes a strong man to admit he stinks but you took the bullet and helped a bunch of us know we're not alone!!

I just want my car to keep the same new car smell that it had when I purchased it. :|

Interesting. I think the car has a smell that is very close to a new car smell, but when my wife got in for the first time she said it was a unique smell that is different from any new car she can remember (we've had quite a few). Regardless, I don't find it offensive at all. My car was manufactured last December.

Wow. I could've written the exact thing as ADG. EXACT same experience. At 7500 miles, smells like leather to me, wife says it smells like manure. It only happens briefly at random times, then POOF! smell is gone in less than 5 seconds. I have manually turned all vents off (incl the one to the rear seats) AND set the climate control to OFF. Still get "that funny odor". I cannot find the source, not matter how hard I try since it is gone in a flash. Thanks to all for posting on such a weird topic - but I've experienced it. One more weird observation - happens more often after a turn (exit ramp, etc).

I just found you guys by googling Q50 smell! I have the exact same problem. Leased my Q50 (base with moonroof) off the lot after sitting in a showroom car that also had the leatherette. Showroom car had no odor but the one I test drove smelled bad. The salesman told me he didn't smell anything and no one has ever mentioned it to him before. After reading this, I find that really difficult to believe although I do think he is straight shooter. I even asked to see another one just to see if it, too, smelled and it did. I took it with the hope that it eventually off gasses enough to not smell, hopefully the way it did with the showroom car. Strangely, my wife doesn't seem to notice it but that's a whole other conversation.

U guys scared the crap out of me... After reading this thread a couple of weeks ago, I've been so paranoid in my car trying to see if I can find that smell.

Mind you I have a Q50S Hybrid, so maybe it is the leatherette versus the real leather. But I was smelling the head liner, sunroof area, seats, headrest, everywhere. I felt like a coke head but instead of coke I was snorting leather dust LOL.

But yea, maybe it's the base version that has the funk? So weird, please post any findings you guys come across, best of luck!

I think I narrowed it down to my trunk. I took out the spare and the liner so I just have the crappy cushions in there right now. I do notice it when it's hot out. Seems to only last a bit - or I just get used to it and it doesn't bother me for long but it is not a pleasant odor.

Edit: and I have the leather seats

No doubt, the trunk stinks more than the car and it is possible that the smell is coming from the trunk but, as I said before, the showroom car was stink-free. I really find it annoying, especially after coming from leather. I'll give it time and see but I also admit that I am more sensitive to some smells than others. If it doesn't go away, though, I'm going to have a problem with my dealer. They acted as though it was just me and, clearly, it's not.
